Cinia and IT Norrbotten Announce Interconnection Agreement to Strengthen Data Link Between Northern Sweden and Central Europe

Cinia’s Northern Digital Highway brings record-breaking capacity to facilitate data intensive operations in the Nordic countries

Cinia Group, Finland-based designer, builder and operator of intelligent connectivity and ICT solutions, today announced an interconnection agreement with IT Norrbotten, regional network operator in northern Sweden, to interconnect their fiber optic networks. The partnership allows both companies to offer international connectivity between Sweden and Finland, Germany and Central Europe, along with Russian and Asian markets.

Norrbotten county in northern Sweden is home to a number of data centers and data intensive operations, thanks to the cool climate and highly developed infrastructure. Originally developed to support schools, hospitals and local authorities in one of the most sparsely populated regions in Europe, the high-performance IT infrastructure built and operated by IT Norrbotten has met with increasing international interest.

Interconnection agreement with Cinia’s Northern Digital Highway offers further benefits to organizations evaluating data center locations in the Nordic countries. The Cinia C-Lion1 submarine data cable between Finland and Germany provides a record-breaking capacity of 144 terabits per second (Tbps) and directly connects to key European network nodes such as DE-CIX Frankfurt, the largest Internet exchange point in the world.

“Network reach, speed, and capacity are crucially important enabling factors for data center operators when choosing their locations, along with energy supply and climate conditions,” said Jukka-Pekka Joensuu, Executive Vice President, Cinia Group. “As enterprise cloud development moves from on-premise to cloud environments, and data center to data center connectivity is ever more critical, our joint Nordic infrastructure meets the needs of the world’s most innovative organizations.”

“The interconnection between Cinia and IT Norrbotten’s high-speed-fibre-based network allows for faster communication between Norrbotten and the rest of Europe and Asia,” said Tony Blomqvist, Managing Director, IT Norrbotten. “This is an advantage for the new data center establishments in the region.”

The Northern Digital Highway enables data center providers to benefit from Nordic countries’ cool climate, strict privacy laws, and low energy pricing. Existing interconnections at the Finnish-Russian border allow for direct access to Asia via the so called Northern Silk Road route, positioning Finland as the key gateway between the East and the West.
