Nanocomp reverses offshoring: a Finland-based optics company is expanding to Hong Kong

Manufactured in Finland, Nanocomp’s products are exported to China.

Nanocomp - a rapidly growing designer and manufacturer of nano-optics from Joensuu, Finland - is expanding its operations to Hong Kong. Due to a rapid expansion of exports, the company decided to set up an office closer to their customers. The company’s revenue derives almost entirely from Asia, which has become the world center for electronics consumption and manufacturing. Nanocomp’s design and manufacturing will remain in Finland.

Nanocomp designs and manufactures nano-optical components which can be controlled with the flow of light with extreme, nanometer-scale precision. The products are used in mobile and tablet screens, flash light lenses, lamps and indicator lights as well as in a variety of measuring devices and machine vision applications.

The nano-optics market is growing rapidly and new applications are constantly being discovered. For example, consumer electronics begin to go beyond touchscreen user interfaces, introducing interfaces that react to common human gestures and body movements. Such interfaces require the use of advanced optical systems, for example, to create a light net invisible to the human eye, against which the camera can recognize and calculate the movement.

In the beginning, Nanocomp’s Hong Kong office will focus on existing customers and technical support; later on, the office will also work with sales and marketing.

“All of research and development, design and production will remain in Finland. Our main competitive advantage is that we control the entire chain: from optical design to production, including cutting and further processing. For our customers this is reflected in speed of delivery and reliability of quality”, says Veli-Pekka Leppänen, Nanocomp’s CEO.

Traditionally, the optics are made by injection molding, but Nanocomp uses self-developed technology that enables to print optics on a roll in the same way as the printing press works. The method is cost-effective and the quality of production is clearly superior to the traditional technologies.

Nanocomp’s turnover last financial year was EUR 6 million and growing rapidly.
