Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks and Cinia demonstrate record capacity 144 Tbit/s on C-Lion1 submarine cable system

Test carried out on the C-Lion1 system demonstrated capacity of 18 Tbit/s per fiber pair, using Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks’ unique 1620 SOFTNODE 8QAM technology over 8 fiber pairs cable

Paris, March 30, 2016 – Cinia Group, a Finland-based designer, builder, and operator of intelligent connectivity and ICT solutions, and Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks (ASN), now part of Nokia, have successfully completed tests on the C-Lion1 submarine cable system demonstating a record-breaking capacity of 18 terabits-per-second (Tbit/s) of data per fiber pair.

Showing an ultimate capacity of 144 Tbit/s (18 Tbit/s x 8 fiber pairs) demonstrates that C-Lion1 can effectively handle increased connectivity and data center requirements driven by cloud computing, big data and digitalization. Linking Germany and Finland, C-Lion1 connects data centers in Northern and Central Europe, and offers a low-latency route between Europe and Asia.

Cinia’s C-Lion1 submarine cable system has implemented the latest generation of ASN high-performance wet plant based on extended repeater bandwidth and, new generation of coherent submarine fiber (CSF-2) fiber. ASN’s brand new 300G 8QAM technology from its 1620 SOFTNODE enables smart spectrum engineering. Additionally, the use of  gridless, coherent detection and advanced error correction coding are used in combination with non-linear compensation to counteract the signal distortions and noise that impact high speed, long-distance transmission performance.

Taneli Vuorinen, Senior Vice President at Cinia Group, said: “This result demonstrates Cinia’s ability to provide ultra-high speed connectivity services with lowest latency for data centers, enterprises and data intensive organisations. The implementation project with ASN was successfully completed as planned, and the new connection is now set to fuel the development of the digital economy.”

Vincent Lemaire, Vice-President Technical Operations at Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks, said: “This achievement showcased the performance of our open wet plant, which offers carriers a unique adaptive evolution for tuning the system capacity and performance throughout the life of a system. With the recent availability of our 1620 SOFTNODE, the ASN solution provides a distinctive networking model to cope with increasing end-user service demands.”
